In this section we will try to address most common problems that the customers might face. These are very simple to fix and doesn’t require extensive 3d printing knowledge.
There are few steps that will help you to set and run the printer.
All Wombot 3D printers come tested and ready to use. In most of the cases you don’t even to adjust or set anything – just hit the print and it is ready to go.
I have received the printer - what is next
Oh good 🙂 Now get the SD card out of the LCD and install the software. It is all on there included for you already. SD card contains the sample gcode files that you can print immediately.
To start printing mount the LCD and connect the cables. If the LCD doesn’t light up after you plugged it in – most likely the cables are wrong way in – swap them.
Mount the spool bracket. It goes on the top. just like in the pictureMount the filament spool and load the filament into extruder. It is described in the next step. After filament is loaded you can choose the file from the SD card and start printing.
The printer comes equipped with LCD. You can print and operate the printer from LCD screen without a need for PC. PC is used only to slice the files and save them as Gcode files for printing.
Operation of the LCD is very simple. In the following steps we will overview each of the menu screens:
With a click of a handle you enter the First level menu. This menu is the only one that changes once you started printing. The prepare section will change into Tune selection. Once it has changed into Tune you can change your printing settings on the fly, i.e. you can change the printing temperature, bed temperature, fan speed, filament extrusion coefficient.
Remember – to get out of the Menu and go to previous window you have to scroll all the way up and click. This will take to previous menu level.
Under prepare manu you will find 2 level menu.
Under this menu you will need to use Autro home function and sometimes you might need to use the Reset BLTouch function. Auto home function will move the nozzle to the home position. from that point you can set the nozzle height.
To adjust the nozzle height and load unload filament (this can be done manually as well) you will use Move axis function.
Please note that Z axis can be moved only by 0.1 and 1mm. As an option it dissapears once you select 10mm movement. Extruder is clasified as an Axis. After you select one of the axis it will start to move accordingly once you rotate the nob.
The other important function under the prepare manu is the filament pre-heat function that allows you to change the filament:
The prepare/tune menus are the main menus that you are going to use.
When you need to change the offset you will have to use Control menu.
In here you will be able to change the nozzle and the bed temperature while preheating. Also the Motion allows you to change the Z offset when adjusting nozzle height.
When adjusting the nozzle height it is important to remember that when the nozzle is too high the Z offset has to decrease, i.e. to become more negative. for instance if the gap is too big you can change the Z offset from -1.5mm (negative 1.5mm) to -2mm (negative 2mm). This will reduce the gap between the nozzle and the glass.
Under control menu you will find two more really important function such as store memory and restore failsafe. In order to preserve the value after the power cycle you need to Store memory after adjusting Z offset.
And remember – if you changed something and don’t know what you have done – use Restore Failsafe function. In some cases it will help you resolve degraded printing quality as well 🙂
Once powered up BLTouch sensor performs self test. If the BLTouch sensor cannot perform the test it goes into error mode and starts to blink.
To reset either use the Prepare/Reset BLTouch through the LCD or simply cycle the power of the printer
Once again the BLTouch sensor is in the error mode. Once it is in the error mode the 3D printer firmware assumed that the Z axis (nozzle) has reached the surface and to prevent from damage by driving the nozzle into the bed it send the axis up – away from harm.
Same as above – cycle the power or use LCD to reset the sensor.
More than likely that the BLTouch got damaged during the print when the print curled or came unstuck. In such a case the pin gets bent and need to be replaced.
Two option for that:
- If you feel confident – replace just the pin. Otherwise
- You will have to replace the BLTouch sensor itself
In order to load the filament you have to follow next steps:
1. You have to pre-heat the nozzle in one of two ways:
a) Turn the nozzle temp on from your preferred printing software or
b) through the LCD menu
2. In order to pre-heat using LCD menu please follow these steps:
Click => Prepare => Preheat => Preheat PLA => Preheat all
After that the nozzle and the bed will preheat to the set temperatures (the ones displayed in the top line of the LCD). Once the temperature is reached you can load the filament.
Loading process is shown in the image below.
Sometimes you might experience that the filament doesn’t want to go into the hole. In such a case make sure that the filament end has clean cut, make sure that the filament doesn’t curl – if needed straighten it out.
Both of these errors are related to the thermistors. The Wombot 3D printers have enabled test for the presence and damage to thermistors – it protects from any further damage.
Min temp error means that the thermistor is missing – either the wires are broken or the glass bead got damaged
Max temp error means that the thermistor wire got shorted out, i.e. got connected and the printer is registering wrong temp
